What is Trans-gender?
Well there are a number of Inter-sexed conditions and one of them is trans-gender. below is my simplified version of the medical description, if you want to read the full medical version, please pm me and ask me for the link to it.
Intersex in Humans
A persons sex is defined at four levels: chromosomal (XY, XX), internal organs (ovaries, testicles), external organs (vulva, penis), and brain development (sexual identity). XX results in a female. XY "if all goes well" around week 8 of a pregnancy, The Y chromosome if present, triggers a cascade of events resulting, in a male.
There are 3 places before birth, that this process can cause errors and intersex children are born.
(1) before the development of the internal sex organs, the XY human will be indistinguishable anatomically and psychologically from a female.
(2) after the development of the internal sex organs but before the development of external sex organs, the individual may either be born with ambiguous external genitals or have genitals apparently in the normal range at birth but, at pubertal age, not develop secondary sexual characteristics at all or develop secondary sexual characteristics that do not match the external genitals.
(3) after the development of external sex organs but before the maturation of the sexual component of the psyche. the individual will be transgendered (formerly referred to as transsexual).
Number (3) is what affects me, so i will try and shed some light on it and why so little is known about us and why so few people know an intersexed person.
Children affected by # 2 where systematically operated on to correct any sex organ defect, but where it was difficult to keep a boy, male, he was usually turned into a female by removing his penis and testicles and a vagina was made, this in effect made him sterile and robbed him of any chance to have children of his own. Most of these babies were operated on within a few months of birth, and most within 2 years of birth, and they were never told about it as they grew up.
These operations on babies have now been stopped in the UK because the women that are now 30-40 years old, are finding out that they are sterile because they were born with ambiguous genitals and turned into girls, have started to speak out about how they feel and that some now understand their childhood confusion for trying to be tomboysboys, and their anger at being robbed of a chance to have children of their own.
Another case was a baby boy in the USA that had his penis burnt off in a botched circumcision when he was a few weeks old, he was turned into a girl, but grew up rejecting his female gender and refusing to adopt the female gender role that Dr's thought would be natural as long as his parents treated him as a little girl.
This case highlighted the fact that brain sex was set before birth and forced Psychiatrists to re-examine transgendered brain development. In the UK transgender is no longer treated as a Psychiatric illness, but is now recognized as a medical condition that falls within the realms of intersexed conditions.
About 1 in 100 people have some form of an intersexed condition:
XXY syndrome affects about 1 in 200 but only 1 in 500 need any form of treatement for it.
Intersexed people have had their condition hidden from them, so for the most part, it is hidden from the public to, but the public treat anyone that falls outside of the heterosexual malefemale norm, as a freak. (although this is slowly changing) I is still very dangerous for transgender people to be themselves in public.
How it affects me:
I always felt i was a girl, and people ask me to put a date to when i felt different and wanted to become a girl, and i find that hard to understand, as i was always a girl as far as i can remember. the question should be "at what age did you realize you are not allowed to be a girl?" well that was age 7 when my dad beat me so bad i had to have 3 weeks off school, just because i was playing dress up with my sister and we were both wearing a dress.
