I did my master's at Oxford Brookes and I enjoyed that experience very much. My masters' dissertation was on Dylan Thomas, and my tutor recommended that I continue on to a PhD because I had a lot more to say than I could in my thesis.
I decided to come to Oxford Brookes specifically because I’d already read a number of the works written by the academic staff here, a lot of the critical works they’d written – my tutor, for example, is a very well-respected figure in modernism – and I wanted to benefit from their teaching. I knew it had a great reputation and I came here for quite a few of the events before I actually started my master’s.
I was lucky enough to give a paper at one of the events run by the postgraduate department to people who are studying so many different subjects. The inter-disciplinary side of being at Brookes is one of the most rewarding aspects.
The facilities in Oxford are excellent. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Bodleian which is just a superb resource to have access to. Moreover there’s so much going on with the Playhouse and the art galleries – there’s always a lot of vibrancy in Oxford and it encourages you into a more academic way of thinking.
The course here gives me a lot of the skills I’ll need in my academic career, like public speaking, making a good argument. It also familiarises you with the processes behind getting funding and submitting papers to journals. I definitely get a lot of help from my tutors in that aspect – it’s not just writing a thesis, it’s also immersing yourself in the academic community.
