Sex therapy is a specialized form of counseling for adults that focuses on sexual issues most often for individuals in relationships (although you do not need to be in a relationship to seek sex therapy).
Sex therapy is most often solution focused. This means that the therapist will try to help develop a clearly defined issue, for example a sexual dysfunction or major communication problems with a partner about sex.
Sex therapy is usually brief. This may mean therapy will consist of anything from a few sessions to more than a dozen sessions.
Sex therapy is usually directive. This means the therapist will be active, asking questions and often giving direct suggestions, homework exercises, and information in an effort to help you meet your goals for the therapy.
As a title, sex therapy is not federally regulated, anyone can call themselves a sex therapist, and even very qualified sex therapists will be vastly different in their experience and approach to dealing with sexual concerns.
