Sometimes wonder this as a physicist, and if physics has an explanation. I think of quantum entanglement, and the fact that when atoms are entangled, their wave function is shared between them, and if you disturb the system you collapse the wavefunction. This paper from May of this year shows it’s possible to entangle 10 separate photons that are spatially separated.
