This is just my personal opinion on this idea of the afterlife. I'd say it's more along the lines of if you do believe in either of them, you spend your life worrying about where you'd end up and that worry alone basically puts you in a type of mental hell. You constantly second guess yourself or anticipate some kind of retribution for your actions. Not only will you be internalizing this fear to behave according to standards set by other humans (religion is entirely born out of mans imagination) you will also be living a life of constant fear from your own society to conform as the retribution wont come from any God, it'll come from the people you know and love. Hell in this instance really is other people. And it's all as real as you decide to let it be.
