Data Protection Act defines the legal basis for handling in the UK information about people to prevent the information to be abusively used by companies, government institutions and private organisation which for any purpose have to store personal and sensitive information about their clients, giving legal rights to people who have information stored about them.
50 years ago when the first computers appeared the government and organisation found out that would be of extremely good if they could store large amounts information about people such as their customers, clients and staff in digital format that would be quickly set up, searched, edited and accessed and take up less space than paper records by the way was created the concept of electronic Databases which normally stored addresses, names, medical history, financial information, criminal records, etc.
