Responding To Messages

Hello All,
I am new to this online scene and I am a bit confused at what goes on. I get a message from someone I find interesting and write back to them and that is the last time I hear from them. I"m not sure if I am doing something wrong or is it the nature of the way `it goes online. another thing is what happened to the days that you would meet for coffee and talk and get to know each other. Do we spend countless hours typing away before we meet? I will adapt but it sure would be nice to talk face to face.
