Hit in the face with elitism - asking: What's in a Word?

I"m newly discovering the importance of words and word usage. Today some one else told me that since I was Gay the interest was no longer there for him. He is Bi. I can only in a very small way understand the thinking behind this kind of elitism...? Before the word (gay) was used - everything was so cool though... thoughts?
