If social media has done anything positive for the world it has been the way it has torn the veil off the beauty industry. Once perfect supermodels have been revealed in all their acne-scarred, cellulite riddled normalcy.

However, that is within itself part of the problem. It feels as though we’re no longer allowed to be happy with being ourselves. While the façade of the beauty industry needs to be torn away to remove the false pressure it places on young people to achieve an unobtainable goal why do we need to see these models pulled down as well?

Yes, they’re not perfect but that is not something to be ridiculed. It simply is. They’re human beings, and human beings are simply not perfect.

BBW Commandment: Love Thyself

One community has begun to step beyond the need to tear down others choosing rather to support and uplift one another has been the BBW community. It has been amazing to see these women step into their strength and take back their power.

These are women who in some cases were once the supermodel ideal and realised they simply were not happy. They choose healthy active lifestyles without the pressure to attain anyone else’s ideal for their bodies. This includes those who would have them “eat a salad and hit the gym” as well those who “want to feed you all day long”.

Their message is clear: “I am not your project and I am not your fetish.”

At the core of a truly Big Beautiful Woman lies an understanding of who she is, what she wants for her life and the kind of people she allows to join her inner circle.

While many women have received a revelation of what it means to love themselves and not strive to attain some randomly selected idea of perfection there are many who are struggling with self-love and acceptance.
