2 week’s ago we gave you the chance to vote in a poll and decide what content we would write about for this week. The results are in, and you voted for BDSM for beginners.

Perhaps you have been thinking about darker fantasies for a long time and are finally seeking that moment to indulge, or maybe you are just newly curious? Finding your feet in the world of kinks can be a little overwhelming, with a multitude of different power dynamics and relationship roles that can be sexual, non-sexual, or a mix of both.

In fact, there are so many that we have only been able to focus on a few of the main types to take those first steps to a kinky relationship!

Dominant

This person is in charge. They take control, lead, and direct, the one who makes the rules, provides the structure and takes on the responsibility of both parties of the relationship. Responsible dominants protect their other half. They strive to maintain a balance, so both parties get what they need out of their play. It isn’t all about them. Punishment may or may not be a factor in the scene.

Submissive

The person who agrees to give power to the dominant. They abide by rules, agree to do the service the dominant has outlined for them, they give the decision making over to the dominant. While some submissives may be shy or subdued, most are not weak in any way. A dominant who treats their submissive like a doormat may find themselves without a submissive.

Switch

Being a switch means that a person can reverse rolls. Not everyone likes to be dominant or submissive all the time, and switching can afford the opportunity for partners to experience new sensations and levels of trust in one another. Sometimes a person can be submissive to one person, but dominant to another. Most switches have been on the BDSM scene for a long time, have played both roles, and are confident in what they want out of a scene.

Bottom / Top

A bottom usually played by a submissive in the world of BDSM, the bottom is often used to describe an individual who gives up control or who receives physical sensation from a dominant also know as a top. Power exchanges can occur with a dominant being a bottom ordering pleasure from a submissive who then becomes the top.

Mistress (Female) or Master (Male)

A master has a heavier meaning for those in a Master/Servant agreement and especially in a no limits relationship. Similar to a marriage, these partnerships are often long-term, and all parties are willing and ready to commit to them. Much like the wedding ring, a collar can be used as a symbol of a servant's commitment to his or her master/mistress. Some masters and servants may even choose to have a formal collaring ceremony to formalise their joining.

Servant

The decision to become a servant is not one that should be taken lightly. It often involves completely giving up control of every aspect of their life. Only suitable for those who wish to be fully controlled and often have no limits. A servant may often give up all rights by signing a master/servant contract. The contract is NOT legally binding. One cannot own or be owned by another, but it is extremely symbolic. They must be subservient to their partners, ask permission before they do anything, and be available for sexual activities whenever it is requested.
