Night Time Naughtiness - Your Sex Dreams Deciphered

11:14 am Thursday, 31st March, 2016

Scientists have found that sexual dreams are incredibly common, with both men and women alike reporting that eight percent of their dreams are about sex. That might not sound like a lot, until you realise that we only spend about two hours of each night dreaming, which then means we spend about 58.4 hours each year specifically dreaming that we are nude and feeding melon balls to Tom Hiddleston (just an example…honest). So what does it all mean?

Check out the handy sex dream guide below and finally get to the bottom of those nocturnal melon ball adventures once and for all. No judgments here.

SEXY SEX

Hopefully for you, your favourite wish fulfilment dream features sex — or at least the promise of it. So what does dreaming about sexy times mean, aside from the obvious? To dream about sex refers to the integration and merging of contrasting aspects of yourself. It represents the need to be more receptive and incorporate aspects of your dream sex partner into your own character. Or a more direct interpretation of the dream may be your libido’s way of telling you that it has been too long since you last had sex.

THE EX SEX

Well, this is a fun one. You thought the relationship—and the feelings you had—were beyond over, but then you dream you're getting it on again. The most common reason we dream of a dreaded ex is because we might need to rekindle the excitement in our current intimate life, especially if we've hit in a dry spell or our current relationship has become a bit too routine.

THE BOSS SHAG

Doesn't get much more awkward than this. Though, sex dreams are not necessarily about the person you're shagging but rather about what he or she represents, This particular one is most likely telling you that it's time to take charge somewhere in your life—as in, you need to be the boss.

THE ORGY

A multi-person romp could signify repressed sexual desire, according to dream experts. (Perhaps you're a bit too conservative in your sex life and need to mix things up a bit with a new position, new toy or new locale?) But this dream might not have anything to do with sex at all: It could mean that you're feeling spread too thin in your waking life and need to reprioritise where you're putting your time and energy.

ORGASMS

Representing an exciting end to something, dream orgasms come up in four percent of sex dreams for both men and women, according to a 2007 study on sex dreams and gender conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The study also found that women reported that four percent of their dream orgasms were enjoyed by another character in their dream, not themselves — a phenomenon that zero men reported.

SEDUCTION

Oops, you did it again — you performed an elaborate strip tease for your A-Level English teacher in your dream last night. What could this madness possibly mean??? You need to be more passionate and direct with your sexual needs. Alternatively, the dream may mean that you are being lured into doing something you don't really want to do.

ANAL SEX

Represents submission. You may be afraid to yield to the wants and desires of others. Like their desire for anal.

ORAL SEX

A willingness to give or receive pleasure/joy. It is symbolic of your creative energy and reaffirms that you are headed in the right direction in life.

GAY SEX (When You're Straight)

Represents a union with aspects of yourself. It is symbolic of self-love, self-acceptance, and compassion. If you are uncomfortable with homosexuality in your dream, then it suggests some fears or anxieties you may be experiencing in your relations with the opposite sex.

So there you have it. But just remember, no matter how many times your dreams lead you to ride in a hot air balloon shaped like a giant penis, it is all only a dream ... or IS IT?
