Making Long Distance Relationships Work

11:46 am Monday, 17th March, 2014

They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, whilst this might be true to an extent, does this include long periods of time and distances between a couple? Should you meet a partner on the likes of a dating website, you may be lucky enough to find someone that’s perfect for you and nearby but then you may find someone a bit further afield and struggle with the space between you. Or perhaps one of the halves could be working away from home for extensive durations, leaving the other behind on their lonesome. Whatever the reason for your lacking in one another’s presence, is it still possible to maintain a strong relationship and what are some things to consider when embarking on a romance of this type?

The Key Is Communication

Regular contact via various methods obviously plays a massive part in this flavour of relationship, but when we say ‘communication’ we don’t necessarily refer to the methods of getting in touch, it’s the level mutual understanding of the relationship’s boundaries. People have needs and may not be able to wait the amount of time between each meeting. All possibilities, probabilities and limits should be discussed between the couple. This conversation shouldn’t be just prior to the beginning of the relationship but also at regular intervals such as once a month to check that neither partner’s views or feelings have changed.

See For Yourself

Video Chat applications such as Skype are lifesavers for members of long-distance relationships, as nice as hearing one another’s voices over the phone is, it’s just not quite the same as seeing their smiling face and reactions to what you’re saying. Should you ever have an argument, it is best done over some form of video transmission as there is only so much situation-diffusing you can do by the ol’ dog ‘n’ bone. Spoken word can be easily misunderstood when there are no facial expressions and body language to go with.

Plan And Save

Make sure that you have something to look forward to in the form of the two of you spending time together. Whether that be in the flesh or simply watching a movie over the net of a weekend, plan ahead however should you want to do the real thing. Should you not be too organised and search for the cheapest flights with enough notice and purchase the best phone plan, things are gonna get pricey sooner rather than later.

From what many experienced long-distance daters have claimed, long distance love is hard, but should you feel strong enough about one another, it’s worth working at.
