Fear Not Boys: New Study Reveals That You’re Not Bad at Chatting Girls Up, You’re Just Tired

12:00 pm Friday, 2nd August, 2013

So guys, how many times have you been out and despite several failed attempts, not managed to land yourself a lady? By men, rejection of this sort is usually dealt with on the walk home. One large kebab, your best mate, and some rather epic denial is enough to restore anyone’s ego back to it’s original state: besides, you’re right, they were so not good enough for you anyway (honestly).

Well, it’s time to brush those lame excuses right under your single mattress because a new study has revealed that men, when tired, considerably over perceive a women’s sexual interest and intent.

The Study

The study group consisted of 60 college students who undertook the Cross Sex Perception and Sex and Commitment Contrast test, created by Martie Haselton and David Buss. Both tests were taken before and after one night of sleep deprivation.

The results showed that in the same way that alcohol can cause frontal lobe impairment, sleep deprivation too causes this problem. Jennifer Peszka, PhD, associate professor of psychology at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., who led the study commented, “Sleep deprivation could have unexpected effects on perceptual experiences related to mating and dating that could lead people to engage in sexual decisions that they might otherwise not when they are well-rested. Poor decision-making in these areas can lead to problems such as sexual harassment, unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and relationship conflicts which are all factors that have serious medical, educational and economic implications for both the individual and for society.”

On a larger scale, sleep deprivation may well be the cause of many serious issues, but to bring it back down to an individual level, how can this study help you?

The Problem

The findings show that a man who is sleep deprived, will significantly over estimate the extent to which a woman wants sex and was interested; to the point of even perceiving that a woman’s sexual interest and intent was much higher than a man’s. That means that when you’re out next time with beer in hand, and not slept in a while, that your judgement of who is interested and who is not, could be completely distorted.

Because of your ability to judge the level of interest wrongly from a woman, you will have a much higher rate of ‘trying it on and failing miserably’, and coupled with the fact you’ve had a beer or two, you should be expecting a much higher rate of knock-backs due to your inability to judge a woman’s intent: maybe pulling in the pub isn’t such a great place to meet after all?

The Solution

Of course there are always steps that you can take to lesson the effect of your terrible pulling skills. No drink and a goods night’s rest will almost certainly improve your selection skills dramatically. Spotting the ‘most likely lady to give you a chance’ should be achieved in a nano-second, restoring your ego and eliminating the chance of you wasting your best chat up lines. The only problem that we can foresee with this approach though, is that makes for no fun at all, and besides, you’re best friend aside, you’ll be missing out on a monster kebab on the way home.
