Gay dating is a happy affair

7:46 am Thursday, 4th December, 2008

Meeting the perfect man online for gay outdoor fun and gay dating is now as easy as reading fiction.

The latest male in the UK to step out of the closet and join the gay dating scene is none other than fictional headmaster Albus Dumbledore of the Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry in the famous Harry Potter series. J.K Rowling the author of this popular Harry Potter series caused a stir amongst people in the UK when she outed Dumbledore a few months ago as a homosexual. After her revelation more than one gay had a “quickie with Dumbledore” or “gay outdoor fun hotspot at Hogwarts” listed on their profiles.

That Dumbledore became an instant gay cult figure, even topping Sir Elton John, is hardly a surprise as European culture has always been prone to focus more on gay men and their adult activities like gay outdoor fun, than on other members of the queer community. One can only wonder if J.K Rowling would have received the same response if she declared one of the main female characters in Harry Potter a lesbian.

Who can blame Rowling when gay men have enjoyed a favored response in certain cultural circles, by comparison with lesbians, transgender people and even straight women? So my question to Rowling would be: In what gay subculture does Dumbledore belong? Even though he’s got long hair and only wears dress robes I don’t think anyone would be brave enough to call him a cross-dresser. I also can’t see him taking part in gay outdoor fun in a London car-park. There are many different gay subcultures that Dumbledore would and also wouldn’t fit unto and I’ll explore the most popular ones with you.

The Bear community is a subculture that features homosexual men with hairy bodies and facial hair and usually large bodies. They are very masculine and they like to promote this outwardly masculine appearance in the gay dating scene. There are not a lot of bears who wants to hook up with a fairy - a gay who displays females like mannerisms and speaks in a high pitched voice. Bears see themselves as a resemblance of the typical blue collar American male and definitely not as an urban queer.

Chubbies or chubs is a subculture in the gay community consisting of overweight or obese men. Most chubbies find solace on gay sites and making new contacts and networking in this way because it is easier for them to meet a man online than in real life because of the way they look. Where straight overweight men have a Mr. Beer belly competition, chubbies celebrate their full figures with the European Big Men’s Convergence title.

A Gay skinhead, also known as a gayskin or queerskin, is a male queer who identifies with the skinhead subculture, often out of sexual interest. What attracts gays to this subculture is the sexual fetish for skinhead clothing styles. There are also gay skinheads that take part in gay outdoor fun and have a violence fetish.

The Drag queen is a subculture of men that dress in a female gender role. They exaggerate certain characteristics of females like make-up and mannerisms for dramatic effect. Drag queens often perform or entertain at an event and they are seen as true artists. Prominent drag queens in the gay community of a city often serve as official or unofficial spokespersons, hosts or emcees, fund-raisers, chroniclers and community leaders.
