It's funny, it seems that no matter when I get involved in discussions with other Scottish people about their home towns/places where they live, as soon as I reply "Methil" to their question of "so where do you live?", there is always at least one or two people who grimace or laugh and say "oohhh Methil, that place is a shithole" or a variation of said insults, occasionally interspersed with faux concern with musings such as "how do you survive in such a dump?". It doesn't help that the still famous song of Letter From America from the Proclaimers also has the line "Methil no more", which most Scottish people my age have heard, again adding to Methil's detriment in social standing.
