There is one less hen in the world. It shuffled off of this mortal coil from a narrow back country two lane road this evening. It decided to play chicken with me and gave the game a valiant effort. In the last nano seconds that this courageous bird breathed, it placed itself in the middle of the lane and stared down 31 and a half thousand pounds of unyielding steel in motion, a juggernaut of unflinching horsepower. To the bird's credit, it never made a sound when the front driver-side tire rolled it out like a feather and innards pie crust. As I rolled away, the greasy spot on the pavement getting smaller in the rearview mirror reminded me of just how tenuous our grasp on the lives we live here on this rock can be.
