Who determines what's socially acceptable or normal?

The other day me and my friends were discussing our sex lives. Now I've always been someone to try to be socially accepted, so I avoid theses conversations. But for once I joined in. I haven't laughed so hard or learned so many interesting things in a very long time.
So last night I got to wondering, why is discussing sex viewed by so many as taboo. Let's face it: we all have sex, there are so many nerve endings in our sexual organs that there is no way we weren't meant to enjoy it, we have to have sex to reproduce, and last but not least important a good round of it does wonders for you physically and mentally. With these things being true why is sex such a shunned topic?

Shame and exclusion (i.e being seperated from the rest) makes people scared and think that they won't be accepted or get to have said sex. Thank religions and such for their prusdish controlling ways. Here's proof, whenever anythinhg gets into the public domain (intrenet, mags, papers, books etc) it is plastered everywhere and taken to extreme levels.

Religion has indeed got a lot to answer for. Catch kids early and brainwash them. When they're adults, even if they break free from it, there is still a residual trace in the subconscious. But a lot depends on culture. For example in Japan several hundred years ago, sex was regarded as something to be enjoyed for its own sake, and was not linked to "sin" or "guilt". Recently at the British Museum, there has been an exhibition of Japanese "shun-ga" erotic art from the golden age of woodblock printing. Just about every sexual deviationpredilection is represented. And at the time, this art form was not done furtively, and was not considered "porn". Other examples exist in other cultures. Westerners on the whole have more hang-ups about sexual matters, even though they like to think they are the most free-thinking (which they're not).
