I believe the term unicorn is used to describe a single woman that hooks up with a couple. Finding such a woman is extremely rare and almost impossible to find just like an actual unicorn.

A unicorn is a single bisexual female. That's it. A male bisexual single is a dragon. I am a bull and a hothusband.

As far as my wife and I define  it as a single bi sexual lady whom is going to be in a relationship withba couple. We are hoping for a long term relationship with such a lady, 

common swinging term used in the community to refer to a single female interested in meeting other couples. Described as such due to the rarity of finding said females. By no means derogatory but quite the opposite, a rare treat.

Everyone got the answer right!  The reason the term unicorn is used is that it's very rare to find a unicorn (either the mythical horse thing or the single bi woman who is willing to join a couple).

Couples are the ones who use that term the most often. They want a female to play with, but do not think long term consent. This term is not particularly liked in the lifestyle. Here are different scenarios 
The make starts spending too much time with the sub [always subs] female in relationship gets jealous and then what happens to the sub? 
In love in situations, which is what some couples are looking for, so they provide clothing, food, medical care? 

!hatvhappens when they grow tired of their toy? A sub is a human being, not a mythical creature. 

A sub is a sub because they like to serve whether it is domestic, sexually, and that is what brings them peace. 

A Dom is not a Dom without someone to Dom, just as a sub is not a sub without a Dom to serve.

Now let's take this magicall situation, the couple have each other, then bring in a sub as entertainment, a toy, a servant, etc.

I am not putting anyone down for playing with a third, what I am saying is the term unicorn is not liked by a large majority of the community and some of the reasons why are what I listed above. 
Also it's not always a bi woman that is wanted by couples. It could be that the male want to be attended to by 2 women, not watch the women together.
