The scent of attraction

10:31 am Friday, 18th April, 2014

I've recently stumbled across a few articles discussing the ' apparent' latests dating craze, pheromone dating or pheromone parties.

Apparently attendees are asked to wear a t-shirt for three days then seal it in a plastic zip-bag, take it along to the party were they're all laid out ( with blue and pink ribbons attached to indicate gender.) People then walk around quaffing wine sniffing dirty t-shirts. You pick the one that attracts you and cling on to it, later in the evening at a grand reveal everyone is matched up with the one they chose.. This is the point were knees should go weak, worlds collide etc etc you get the idea?

This got me thinking, pheromones are key triggers of sexual attraction within mammals, this has been proven when they put a chimp who was suffering from a cold in with some ' horny' or in season female chimps. He just wasn't interested, he sat in the corner with a chuffing hump on... He simply couldn't smell them.

I don't have a particular question, I'm just interested in fellow bloggers views on this.

Have you ever been visually or mentally stimulated by someone only to find something's not quite clicking? you cant quite put your finger on it.

Have you ever been attracted to someone who's just out of your usual remit and you can't explain why?

Does the scent of attraction exist? have you ever thought you've caught a wiff of it, how did it make you feel, what was it like?

I would never sniff be three day dirty clothing, jeezo not the kinda party i would like to be invited to at all Eeewwww. But i have on quite a few occasions caught a whiff of shall i say what to me was to me a delicious mans scent and oh hell yes Mmmm. Rather like a certain TV advert it flickered crossed my mind to embrace them and plant a kiss. Hmm having to exercise self restraint is not alwasy a rewarding task lol ;-)

Oh yes wingit you are not alone in your sniffing habbit as i too have buried my face in a loved ones clothes after they wore them, but not dirty clothing. Deeply inhaled their scent.
Yes on ocassion it is the eau colonge but mostly the ones i have fleeting thoughts of planting my lips on are the ones whose eau de bloke, manly essence(not unwashed sweaty) that attract my i embracing thoughts ;-)

I'm not trying to pretend that my biological background gives me the credentials to comment on this - because it's not my field. However, my theory is that humans do indeed have a remnant pheromone sensorium, except that it has regressed to such an extent that it's of little practical value in modern society: other cues have a much greater impact, whereas perhaps pheromones provide some kind of minor background subliminal stimulus that can occasionally tip the balance.

I'm sufficiently aware of my own body odour to realize that I have different smells for different occasions: physical exertion, heat prostration, skipping a bath for a few days when it's very cold.....and sexual excitement. I'm totally honest when I say that I produce a musky odour when I'm horny. I'm certainly aware if it, but unsure whether my partner would notice. I'm also aware that certain perfumes make me more horny than others: for example patchouli. But I think in some cases what perfumes are doing is releasing memories and happy associations that make one more inclined to be sensual.

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I've been hesitant about some ill-defined background factor if my partner otherwise ticks all the attractiveness boxes. However, I fully admit I'm very visually oriented, and if I'm stimulated visually, the tactile follows naturally. Certainly any olfactory effect is subliminal at best.

Not sure I'd find the smell of any sweaty tee-shirts attractive.

Can't beat burying your face into your pillow to take in the aroma of V&R Sexbomb on your pillow the morning following the night before ;-)

My take on this is that smells and aromas trigger memories from the past. Catching the smell of something that was good in the past instantly lifts me and something that wasn't good goes the other way.

I think the Pheromone thing is real enough but will tend sot get masked now by perfumes etc.

I agree with Skebbie that we smell differently for different things.

Wingit. " Ah,the sweet smell of success " ,there's no accounting for it.
When I was a young, fit and handsome rugby player,we used to find a coterie of young ladies, waiting for us in the changing room afterwards.
Was it the sight of so many naked blokes that attracted them and caused them to jump in the communal bath with us, or something more subtle ? I have often wondered if there would be fortune to be made by marketing a male splash-on toilety, smelling of beer, mud, fresh sweat and Goddard's White Horse Linament .img src="imagesadultemoticons007.gif"

True Wingit and on a less happy subject, I can still sometimes catch the smell of death I encountered 30+ years ago (even experience it in dreams.) Even now, makes me feel nauseous.
It never leaves one I suppose, but maybe that's a good thing as a salutory reminder that there are many more positive things in life, to focus on.

Maybe we should all look forward to the introduction of smell-a-vision to our on-line profiles. Can you imagine all those irresistible aromas oozing from our screens for us to drool over?
Hmmm .. unfortunately there would also be the smelly sock, bathroom in need of a clean, tobacco and beer smells too.
