But over time, a stronger yuan will effectively increase the purchasing power of Chinese buyers, helping consumer-focused companies such as beverage giant Coca-Cola Co., car maker General Motors Co., and cellphone seller Motorola Inc. It could also be a boon to companies that feed China's industrial demand, such as construction-equipment makers Caterpillar Inc. and Komatsu Ltd., and mining companies BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.
China already has become a pivotal market for many multinational companies. It is the world's largest for cars, cellphones, beer and iron ore. China accounted for 16.6% of chip maker Intel Corp.'s revenue in the year ended Dec. 26, up from 13.8% two years earlier.
