Material Space
The concept of “material space” crystallised out of a more general contemplation of containers and their relationship with space.
It struck me that the usefulness of any object is in a sense defined by and restricted to its boundary of interaction.
It is this boundary which defines form (size and shape) - and often, in the case of many objects it is specific form which also defines function.
If we take as an example, a steel nut, or a steel bolt - the functional boundary could be regarded as either the positively exterior form of the object, or the negatively exterior space, immediately surrounding the object.
As such - the boundary itself cannot really be said to belong to either the object, or the space surrounding it - as it exists only in the relationship between the positive and negative aspects.
This introduces the concept of material space - which can be imagined as a material void which lies within the boundary of usefulneSs
