Just passing through long marston near york on friday, i noticed a little avenue with the name , butt acre! along with wet wang , cock hill, brown fold, and minehead ( only amusing if said with mock german accent, never mind ill get me coat!). the countryside has wonderful scope for producing quite obscene images in the minds eye , of how some places acquired their name. yorkshire seems to have myriad, of butt lanes or cock hills, Can anyone come up with any more amusing names you ve seen on your travels, or taken the opportunity to utilise the quiet country lane for the purpose with which it appeared to be so called.
