'Ask Vida' Video - Curious? Questions Are Great!

You may have seen from my most recent video that I’ve done a little, casual ‘mind-dump’ of tips for starting out in drag. These could come in handy for drag, cross dressing or whatever you fancy and to be entirely honest, there’s so many little nuggets of information I’ve picked up over the years that it’s really hard to do a really structured video of the answers, hints or tips that you might want. So, here’s a great chance for you to get involved!

I’m Planning on doing my first ‘Ask Vida’ video where I’ll be able to answer some of YOUR questions! It’s always good to ask questions and a chance to learn new things. I’m not for one second going to suggest that I’m some great authority on anything, but I’d be delighted to share my experience with you and hopefully we’ll have a little fun along the way. I’m planning on doing one of these ‘Ask Vida’ vids fairly regularly, so for this first one, I’m going to give you free reign to ask me anything you want! We’ll pick some of our favourite questions and you’ll see the answers when we do the video. So, with this in mind, I’m going to tell you why I think exercising curiosity can be a very positive thing…

So, why are questions great?

If I hadn’t asked questions when I started out, and indeed throughout life in general, it would have taken me so much longer to get into my stride! Some people are afraid to ask things and then there’s others who just make up an answer and come up with the wrong one. Asking questions and healthy conversation are part of what makes us so interesting. If I get asked a question, I’m never annoyed or inconvenienced, as it shows that the person asking is open to learning rather than making assumptions. And trust me, a Drag Queen gets asked a LOT of questions! This is why communication is so healthy. If there was more sitting down, asking questions and having frank, honest discussions with an open mind and receptiveness to learn from others, then the world would probably be a little brighter.

I can sometimes be a stubborn ass, I’m the first to admit that. The amount of times I’ll go and attempt a task and make a complete balls up of it because I assumed I’d figure it out…. Well, I’m not even going to try and count those. It’s true, learning by doing is the best thing sometimes, but asking for help is vitally important sometimes. There are times where you might think your question is ‘stupid’ or you might look daft for asking, but who cares? It takes courage to ask for help and it’s the way we learn, so in my eyes, there’s no such thing as ‘stupid questions’ – Every question shows a willingness to understand. And that’s the basic thing that drives us all: Understanding.

It’s human nature to understand things. I’ve often heard that people fear what they do not understand, so if people can ask questions of each other and understand them better, it leads to a mutual understanding and more positive relationship. Look at every friendship you’ve ever made in your life. They all start by asking questions and sharing information with each other. That’s how it all works! As I put in one of the ‘Adventures in Isolation’ blogs, we seems to have different ‘incarnations’ as we go through life, as our experiences continue to shape us – not just in early life, but right the way through. Who we were at one point in our lives may not be who we are a few years later. That’s the beauty of experience. Let me give you a quick example of this: I’ve known people who, in our teens, were violently discriminating. People that were so homophobic they’d have actually punched me on sight. Now, it’s hard to believe that I’ve actually met some of these guys years later who have come up and profoundly and sincerely apologised for how they’ve been in the past. Some, I’ve actually ended up getting along with. They’ve freely acknowledged and often explained that they weren’t the same person they were then and that experience has changed them. Now, It would be so easy to continue being angry at these people or refuse to get along with them, but what would that actually gain? Absolutely nothing. I actually love sitting down with people who’ve brought about positive change in themselves like that and I love hearing the whys and hows of it. It shows our great innate capacity for change and growth and communication is the root of all that. Of course, I’ve encountered the other type too, who claim they’ve changed and slip back into damaging behaviours, but not everyone is as willing to improve themselves. The bottom line is: Sharing common experiences, learning from each other, is what makes us so great as a species. I’m seeing it all around us in the news right now, people who are desperate to be heard to try and bring about positive change, they just can’t find the right people who are willing to listen. But imagine the potential there is when the listening and communicating really starts! That’s the adventure we’re all on together if we can remind ourselves – The adventure to learn and understand all we can and to just be happy. And understanding starts with a single question. And that’s why questions are so great.

I’m really looking forward to this! So, if you have any thing you want to know about drag, performance, my experience, my opinions on things or anything at all really, get them in the comments or message them in and I’ll do my very best to answer them!

Let’s have some fun!
