Claire starts her long journey into being the woman she has always felt inside - Part 1

Well, I had my first appointment this morning with The Adelaide Gender Clinic, also known as One Life to Live, and it was simply wonderful! OMG - everything I hoped and dreamed would happen, happened.

The practitioner was a transgendered psychologist and had gone through all the same things I had gone through. From the first time wearing my mum's underwear at age 12 through all the following years of shame and self-loathing and just not loving myself.

I told her that my goals are to undertake the counseling, start a program of hormone treatment and finally undertake gender reassignment surgery. I said that sometime after I start the hormone treatment, I would be coming out to my friends and to be Claire in the workplace. Now bear in mind that Claire has never stepped foot out of my apartment en femme, so that, for me is a big stretch goal.

She suggested that it would be better for myself and my acceptance of who I am, to do that sooner, rather than later. I agreed. People who are my friends will accept me and those who do not, are not my friends.

So much happened in that 90-minute consultation that it would take forever to type it here, but the practitioner fully supported me, understood me and said that I fit into the known characteristics of the clients she has treated and supported through their transition, and that she believed that, with the appropriate preparation and counseling, I would be able to commence Hormone Therapy (apparently it isn't called HRT because they are adding hormones and not replacing them) - I think she said it was called "Transfeminine Hormone Therapy", pretty soon.

With that news and the news that she fully understood and supported me re the Gender Reassignment ("bottom") surgery in Melbourne, I was overjoyed. I cried several times when discussing my history of feeling this way since age 12, and the shame and self-loathing I have felt ever since which fed into serious depression and anxiety.

I guess therapy SHOULD be therapeutic 🙂. The other thing she said was that I need to start accepting and loving myself - I am always kind to others, but she said I need to be kind to myself first and foremost.

Lots more happened but I will finish this off here by saying I have lined up weekly appointments with her for the foreseeable future, and in about 3 to 4 weeks, she will be having an after-hours consult for me in the clinic instead of Zoom which we used today. I thought that was OK, and then she told me, of course I need to come as Claire and my heart froze for a few beats, but pretty much straight away, I knew I could do it and I had to do it and I wanted to do it.
