Sounds like a pretty crappy experience, but not because of you or anything you did, but because of an idiot.
I'm going to guess here that the reason he couldn't go through with is was because he is married and was feeling guilty because things were getting too real. Some guys like the flirting and sexual tension they get from emailing or texting, but when push comes to shove they just chicken out.

Most important thing is not to get down on yourself, this is not your fault. You obviously committed, he didn't (or couldn't). His loss I would say.
