Beginner’s BDSM: Munches and Dungeons, Things to Know Before You Go

For those in the BDSM lifestyle, the perfect opportunity for a spot of socialising with fellow enthusiasts and meeting of new like-minded people is munches and dungeons are the place where they can really be themselves with one another and do some true ‘bonding’. As superbly sexy as dungeons are, they can also be extremely intimidating for those who are new to the scene.

So here’s our tips for beginners who want to dip their toes (and any other appendage they may feel like dipping) into the pool that is the saucy world of BDSM.

A great introduction into BDSM and the people who are inclined toward it is a munch. A munch is simply a social gathering for enthusiasts to have a laugh with one another and meet others within the BDSM community. Often in a public setting such as a pub, expect to find people from all walks of life often in average clothing and sometimes leather (not often fetishwear due to the public nature of the meeting place).

At a munch, attendees will discuss everything from their everyday life to BDSM tips along with sharing their own kinky experiences. Don’t turn up with the expectation of meeting someone for sex however as you will most likely be disappointed and possibly stand the chance of making people uncomfortable as this is not what they’re here for at all!

To find a munch close to you, search around online, there’s plenty of sites which munch organisers use to advertise their gatherings should you fancy trying one out. Alternatively if you already know someone within the lifestyle, they could bring you along to a munch or possibly put in a good word for you to gain access should it be a more exclusive meeting which they attend.
Dungeons are a BDSM lover’s dream, filled with props and people who all share a secret pleasure, BDSM. A dungeon is the BDSM enthusiast’s place to let go of their inhibitions and indulge in their fetish without any judgement from the outside world.

Whilst it may be a place to let go of anything which may have previously been holding someone back from entirely being themselves, there are still rules for those who wish to join in.

Perhaps this seems like a fairly obvious statement to most, but don’t touch prior to asking permission. This goes for both props and people, most people attending won’t be looking for any uninitiated physical contact unless it is someone who they feel they can trust and should they have brought their own toys and things, they aren’t going appreciate a stranger’s hands all over them. On the same note of consideration, be aware of your surroundings. Should there be a ‘scene’ taking place then you don’t want to be interrupting at all. A scene is an interaction between two or more people which may or may not involve sexual activity, and not only is there the possibility of disturbing someone during one of their scenes but also the possible safety hazards involved should they be participating in a heavier style of play such as edge play where they may be items that could cause serious damage to someone. So stay alert and be mindful.

Don’t forget to bring some anti-bacterial wipes or something that could be used to clean off the equipment after you’ve used it so that you can leave areas how you found them. Often, dungeons will have the cleaning equipment available for your use but have some of your own handy just in case.

Wear your outfit underneath a layer of ‘average’ clothing which you can simply take off upon your reaching the dungeon and bring a bag to throw your clothes into for the duration of your session. Some dungeons provide changing rooms but in case you’re caught out and there is no option to strip off in private this may be an option for you.

Each individual dungeon will have their own specific rules to follow on dress code, etiquette etc. so you may want to savvy up prior by contacting the dungeon owner/ staff.
