The free ride
Extracts from Easy Money, David Spanier
(Examining correlation between sex and gambling, taking gender differences into account)
Calculate coeffients of friction & drag, adjusts for changes in velocity, plots relevant positions & trajectories clicking passes of rotor in front of fixed reference point
- More at stake than material gain, namely self esteem, honour, dignity, respect – in a word, status.
- Not surprisingly a thousand glitches upset the process when it came to the real thing
- Subjected to indifference, rejection or outright abuse -> feeling inadequate, insecure, unliked, worthless & helpless. Compensate – prove to others superior, should be liked & admired
- Feels like foot massager run amock – getting ten week course in acupuncture all in one night
- Subdued, withdrawn, frightened, abject & almost cringing in demeanour
- Could claim statistical victory – proved could beat game (& then quit?)
- See as dissolute/immoral
- One day another team will try to beat roulette. I believe they’ll do it. (That day is NOW.)
- Figures can’t lie, but liars sure can figure. Bob Beckman
- Raindrops running down windowpane
- Thrills & regressions
- Craving for action – seduce
- Vicarious thrills
- Step, literally, beyond door, can see what happened to poor guys who didn’t understand, who didn’t make it – the bums on the sidewalks panhandling four quarters
- Bribery & corruption, fraud, cheating, offences
- Minutes later he (Waterman) returned with a loaded gun in his hand. He pointed it at Sinatra. ‘Listen you! If you ever lay a hand on me again I’ll put a bullet through your head!’ ‘Aw, come on,’ Sinatra drawled, with a disparaging gesture, ‘that gun stuff went out with Humphrey Bogart!’”
- A bit of a showman, though his main audience was himself
- He liked audiences, though he was mostly his own audience.
- You can live how you like & do what you like, but you must never, ever, flaunt it.
- As one might irreverently put it, ‘Can the sharks be persuaded to stop biting?’
- No doubt, takes care of any little personal need.
- Everything that happens in the world represents a vast game in which nothing is determined in advance, but the rules. The play is what matters.
- Goes right back down to the DNA chain, spanning thousands of millions of years, to the origin of life itself.
- Combative, challenging attitude, almost a cockiness as he feels justified in what he has done, that there’s really nothing wrong with him, that the problem is everybody else’s fault
- Bravery – rise – have reflexes, experience, coolness to put it back in the last moment & then go up again
- Offers quickest, easiest opportunity for action
- Doubly risky, because chances are against player & seduce to gamble, to lower resistance to prudence and caution, to take even more risks
- Need for action satisfied in other ways
- Masculine solution to overcome, be a man, fight back, show them, win acceptance & approval from the crowd
- Vicarious thrills from watching
- Girls role to model to be liked, accepted, wanted, loved protected
- hospitality receive where high action is immensely seductive
- in brief, opportunity for ephemeral ennoblement abounds
- it’s all there: the thrill of the challenge, the joys & entrancement of success, the pain of rejection
- fairground amusements like swings, roundabouts & switchbacks associated with sense of giddiness & vertigo, leading to loss of balance, stability, of firm contact with the earth
- taming wild animals
- new forms of experience, new gratifications – there is an overtly sexual connotation in expression like Virgin peak and Virgin land
- any new sexual partner is a thrill, especially if belongs to another race, colour or creed
- 3 basic element of thrills, fear of danger, voluntary exposure to it, hope that all will turn out well in the end, is present in most sexual liaisons: usual pattern is individual is prompted – either by own urges/ external stimulation – to abandon safe zone of tranquil existence, expose himself more or less voluntary to situations which inevitably increase tension he has to bear in the hope that his skills will enable him to enjoy these situations, release tension by gratifying urges & that eventually will be able to return unharmed to safety of tranquil existence
- LUST IN ACTION
- Test of character in conduct when chips are down: qualities such as courage, gamble, gameness, integrity, gallantry & above all composure
- Action not only seen as impulsive/irrational conduct in taking on risks, also means of showing character, acquiring/losing it

How would you convince a woman to fuck without having to pay
for it? - saying I love you is less time consuming than earning money;
an engagement ring is cheaper than an escort agency and lasts longer etc. as
my south african counterparts thought thankfully not European
- do the rest and rest!
