Some guys do it because they can.
More would do it if they could.
And all would do it if nature had her way.
For most guys the 'Hit and run' plan is a leftover attribute of the days when we lived in small groups, and like animals, the alpha males had the most choice.
Females accepted this as they wanted the best choice.
Today, the best choice for women is basically a range of attributes, with money being a significant item.
When a guy meets a lady his thoughts are in the following order.
Is she attractive?
Is she available?
Do I have a chance?
How long will it take?
How much will it cost?
Can I get out of it if necessary?
All men know that getting sex is going to cost them in some way.
They intuitively apply Game Theory
This is the
High win - High loss. Put all your money on one horse
Low win - Low loss Spread your bet on several horses
The High win approach is to overwhelm the lady with gifts and attention in the hope he will get his goal quickly.
If he doesn't then he has made a high loss, and may have spent his resources of time and money with no result.
The Low win approach is to spend a little at a time and see how he gets on. If the lady welcomes his attentions then he will spend more, if not, then he has made a low loss.
The best result is the High win - low loss game.
Here, he gambles and wins, and after that keeps winning (her favours and affections) with a low outgoing.
But experience will show that ladies also play a game.
If they can make a guy commit enough resources of time and money then that means he has made an investment, and will probably keep going if she encourages him enough. It also stops him making other investments with other ladies.
Clever ladies will get several guys making high investments but not winning.
Not so clever ladies will offer rewards on the basis of low investments in the hope that better will come. (sigh).
So, if a guy plays the high win game, obtains his goal, and gets out, he has made the best investment from his viewpoint.
Of course, there are other aspects of this. If you are looking for answers on Love, commitment, relationships, etc. then it will need another question related to those.
