Music and Musings: All Of the Stars

6:16 pm Wednesday, 15th October, 2014

"So open your eyes and see
The way our horizons meet
And all of the lights will lead
Into the night with me
And I know these scars will bleed
But both of our hearts believe
All of these stars will guide us home"

Because I'm down under the weather, I decided to write midweek as I sniffle my way through another box of tissue (no, I am not watching TFIOS, it's my damn cold that just won't let up - though I did shed a few tears when I read and eventually succumbed to the visual version of TFIOS). Yes, I'm a hopeful romantic beneath the tough cookie bravado I always put on. I fit in with the boys magnificently since I can outdrink them if I wanted to but I am a proud femme fatale when it comes to sappiness and true effin' love.

My cynical and jaded outlook changed the moment I heard Ed Sheeran sing about stars and the other side. It speaks volumes about loss and heartache, more than the shallow ones I've had in this lifetime. Admittedly, his voice and the musical arrangement doesn't really impress me much. I consider the melody as something banal, the type of song I would listen to in passing but I won't go the extra mile to put it on my playlist. Then I really listened to the lyrics. Oh the lyrics. And possibly because of my familiarity with TFIOS, thus, the worthiness of this song to be blogged about here in my humble corner of the world wide web.

I'm currently into indie artists with unique (translation: weird or unusual hums and sounds incorporated in the song) cacophonous rhythms. So why Ed Sheeran with his love and loss rendition? As I was trying to stuff the noogies back up my nose to keep it from running, I happened to gaze up at the sky and I saw the infinite number of twinkling stars. What started out as something unromantic inadvertently turned into a captivating moment of self realization. Unexpected things happen just as we resign ourselves to the blandness of our monotonous routines. Most of the time, the shift is so subtle it takes another boring gesture for us to finally see the light. And so our perspectives begin to change, along with the notion of who we thought we were. The paradigm becomes screwed and we are left discombobulated with the discovery that life as we knew it, will never be the same. Simply because someone came along and realigned the stars to suit both of your purpose. And who are we to question the great universe when that happens? To be given the chance to KNOW how it feels like to be a part of something amazing, no matter how infinitesimal it may seem, is already an honor.

"And I thought of us
Back to the time,
You were lying next to me
I looked across and fell in love
So I took your hand
Back through lamp lit streets I knew
Everything led back to you
So can you see the stars?"

Weekend countdown begins. WTF days are dragging. Have a good one y'all :-)
